School Council Projects – Spring Term

Easter Egg Competition

The student council organised an Easter egg competition for the whole school. Students could make and bring their Easter egg creations into school for judging or Miss Abel and Roni Jopling offered students opportunities to design and make an Easter egg in school at lunchtime. These eggs could be based on  the students’ favourite footballer, singer, actor, movie or book character or an animal into an Easter egg. We had so many entries it was hard to pick a winner so we picked the top 8.

SEND IT

As part of South Tyneside SEND IT group, 3 students worked alongside other SEND schools at the Town Hall. This year’s project was looking at symbols that are used within the local community to assist with communication. The focus was South Tyneside hospital and how best to support patients and carers when attending A&E. Students worked together and identified a need  for symbols to access x-rays, blood tests, scans, ward admissions as well as other facilities within the hospital. The sessions allowed students to  be pro-active in their findings, make new friendships, grow in confidence and be proud of their achievements to help the community.

The Word

As part of South Tyneside Youth Council, Hafiz, Philip and Leyton were invited to participate in their ‘Culture, Media and Sports’ campaign. The first event was held at The Word, which was a tour and information  session. The students were given a tour and shown what facilities were available for their school and their families. They took part in a group discussion and debate workshop about local issues, a keyring  making session and a look into the upcoming 3D designing technology available in schools. It was a very useful workshop as the students were given the opportunity to join the library, work the 3D printer, interact with other students and see what the wider community and our school could benefit from visiting there.

Simonside Climbing Wall

The second event was held at ‘Simonside Climbing Wall’ and the focus of that event was to showcase some activities to promote health and wellbeing through sport. Hafiz, Philip and Leyton participated in yoga, a discussion and debating session and small physical teambuilding games. They were paired up with students from Hebburn Comprehensive school where they showed positive interaction skills, resilience and confidence throughout the day. The students were able to voice their opinions and debate with others about the opportunities regarding fitness within South Tyneside. It was a very useful workshop as it allowed the students to work as part of a team
with mainstream students, showing them they can do anything they put their mind to.

Meeting date: 10.02.25

The school council discussed the importance of recycling around school. Students were passionate that this is something as a school we should do for the environment.  It was agreed that an email would go out to all classes and office areas asking if they would like a recycling box. Ms Hayes designed a recycling label; council members delivered the boxes and labels. All classes now have access to a recycling box.

Crisp Packet Project was brought to our attention by Oliver from Pink Class as well Miss McHugh from Phase 5. They each thought it would be a fantastic opportunity for school to become involved in and make a real difference to people. The charity collects crisp packets and turns these into blankets for both homeless people and people struggling with the rising heating costs. The school council are going to participate in a live demonstration/workshop on the 14/3/25 seeing how these blankets are created. Please watch our video link to see what it is all about? I hope you can support us with this project. Look out for further updates on social media.  https://crisppacketproject.com

School council discussed how to support Pawz for Thought. It was agreed to create and share a poster requesting a range of small animal foods, pet toys and bedding. The collection would be open until 20/3/25. The school council set up a donation station. Mr Rue agreed to an animal dressing down day on the 28th February. All staff and students paid 50p for the privilege and there was a prize for the best dressed. The winner of the competition was Keisha from Yellow Class.  Mrs Abel, Ms Hayes, Mrs Dixon and Mrs Murphy made and sold cakes to raise additional funds. We raised the huge total of £201, which will be presented by Shaun, Ryan and Pink Class on their upcoming visit to the Pawz for Thought on 24/3/25.
