School Council Projects – Autumn Term 2

Meeting date: 18.11.24

During our November meeting, the school council were extremely passionate about arranging a school Halloween party. The party was planned and arranged for the 25th October 2024. The students spoke with Mr Rue and Mrs Powley to get permission to hold the event. Then different students spoke to the wider staff team. As a team, we needed support to create spooky play list of music for the disco. Miss Stutters and Mr Wilkinson supported with this and definitely helped keep the costs down. Mrs Murphy, Miss Hayes and Miss Abel worked with the student council on the planning, organising and funding appropriate party games and prizes. The student council also wanted to organise a fancy dress competition as part of the day, which was done successfully. The children and young people looked amazing.  We would like to thank the wider team who gave up their spare time to decorate the hall with gravestones and props to make it look absolutely spooktacular and everyone who attended.

Healthy Minds offered Epinay School the opportunity to train students to become peer mentoring. We thought this would be a positive programme for us to become involved with and help us as individuals but also as a team moving forward. Mrs Campbell led it alongside Natalie from Healthy Minds. Eight school councillors were selected and worked really hard on developing their communication skills, role-play tasks, problem solving activities and fun activities to engage with others. The 8 students are now trained and are beginning to lead playground games sessions on a rota. The hope is that school play will improve children and young adults mental health, help regulate their emotions and form positive friends.

School Charities that we have chosen to support this year are:

  • Hope & Hospitality
  • Pawz For Thought

A donation station was set up for resources for Hope & Hospitality in the lead up to Christmas. The students sent information out via posters, dojo and social media to friends, parent and carers. We were really pleased with the huge support these charities have received during such a challenging financial time. We were lucky enough for sixth form students to deliver these essential donations as part of their volunteering day.

Student council members have played an active role in deciding afterschool clubs and house trip rewards. In the autumn term, there was a movie, hot chocolate and pizza day as well as a glow in the dark sports activity day with pizza lunch.
