What is Phase 3
Within Phase 3 an emphasis is put on pupils developing their independence within their lessons, in preparation for moving to Phase 4 where they will begin accreditation. We aim to ensure students are exposed to situations where they need to show resilience, be good communicators, need to work independently and as part of a team, whilst also building on skills and knowledge throughout the curriculum areas.
Phase 3 groups access core and foundation subjects as part of their timetable alongside personal development. English lessons follow either the Read Write Inc format from phase 2, or our own scheme of work, depending on the students ability level. For the majority of the students the timetable is structured in the following way.
- English – 4 lessons per week
- Maths – 3 lessons per week
- Science 3
- PE 2
- Humanities 1
- RE 1
- PSHE 1
- Art/DT 1
Key Features
Personal development
Students take part in one personal development afternoon per week, on a termly carousel, examples of these being outdoor education, Duke of Edinburgh, cooking and natural enterprise. (see personal development page for more information). This gives students the opportunity to take part in activities which they may not have experienced before, work with different staff, both internal and from external providers, with the aim being that they build essential skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and the ability to overcome personal barriers which will be crucial in adulthood.
Some of our students require a higher level of nurturing and are not ready to move around the school each lesson to a different teacher, therefore they would be part of our lifeskills pathway.
Lifeskills at Phase 3
Phase 3 Life Skills provides a nurturing environment for young people who may require further adaptations to the curriculum and/or a greater consistency of staffing and environment. Students continue to access English lessons within the main school which is streamed to their level/ability. Maths lessons within life skills are delivered through practical
based learning to develop skills in real life situations. The life skills curriculum has been written to incorporate all of the other subjects with the main aim to promote confidence and independence; developing a knowledge and skill base that equips and prepares young people for adulthood.
Guest speakers and outside visits
Within all phase 3 classes, guest speakers are used from external agencies and companies to enhance a student’s experiences, along with outside visits linked to curriculum areas.
This gives students the opportunity to broaden their horizons and gain a better
understanding of the outside world.
